Communities of Character Framework

Communities of Character Framework

Forming Whole Persons for a Life of Purpose and Service

Because We Are Called for More

Overview

At the University of Providence, we believe each person is called for more—to live with deeper compassion, to lead with integrity, and to serve with courage. Rooted in the Catholic Intellectual Tradition and inspired by the legacy of the Sisters of Providence, our Communities of Character Framework guides how we live, learn, and grow together.

This framework is more than a program—it’s a way of life. It reflects the vision of Blessed Emilie Gamelin, whose love for the poor, sick, and forgotten reminds us that true education forms not just minds, but hearts and spirits.

At the University of Providence, we form students to become people of character—individuals who bring healing, hope, and justice to a world in need.

What is a Community of Character?

A Community of Character is one rooted in love, mutual dignity, and care for the vulnerable. In the spirit of the Sisters of Providence, it is a place where:

  • Each person is welcomed as sacred
  • Compassion and courage guide how we respond to challenge
  • Service is not optional but essential
  • Differences are respected and honored

Our actions reflect a trust in God’s Providence and a commitment to the common good. To be called for more means embracing a life of faithful service, moral courage, and deep humanity—a life modeled on Christ and animated by the charism of Providence.

Framework Pillars

The Communities of Character Framework rests on four foundational pillars that embody the Sisters of Providence’s mission to bring hope and healing to the world.

1. Whole Person Formation

Education that nourishes the heart, soul, and mind.

We believe in the dignity of the whole person. Every student is formed not only through academic rigor, but through relationships, reflection, and service.

  • Grounded in Catholic Social Teaching and the human person as created in God’s image
  • Encourages growth in wisdom, compassion, resilience, and spiritual depth
  • Promotes health, purpose, and a sense of one’s sacred vocation
2. Virtue in Community

Virtue is cultivated in love and relationship.

Character is not built in isolation. We foster a campus culture of kindness, justice, hospitality, and trust—virtues that reflect the compassionate legacy of Emilie Gamelin.

  • Prioritizes empathy, humility, and active listening
  • Seeks inclusion and respect for all, especially the marginalized
  • Models shared responsibility for a caring and just community

3. Student Code of Conduct as Formation

A response rooted in mercy, not merely rule enforcement.

Our Student Code of Conduct, outlined in the Argo Key, is not about punishment—it is about formation. When harm occurs, we respond with restorative practices that seek healing, understanding, and growth.

  • Encourages accountability rooted in dignity
  • Fosters opportunities for reflection and transformation
  • Aligns with the Sisters’ mission to walk with and uplift those in need
4. Integration Across Student Life

Formation is everyone’s mission.

Student development is not confined to one office or experience. From residence life to campus ministry, from leadership to wellness, every dimension of student life is an opportunity for character formation.

  • Collaboratively led by staff, faculty, and peer mentors
  • Reflects a shared mission to form people of conscience and compassion
  • Ensures students encounter consistent support for personal and spiritual growth

Why It Matters

In a world that often devalues the vulnerable and glorifies self-interest, the University of Providence stands as a witness to something greater. Our Communities of Character Framework prepares students to:

  • Lead with moral clarity and a heart for service
  • Practice justice, compassion, and mercy in all relationships
  • Respond faithfully to the needs of their communities and world
  • Live out the call to be agents of healing and hope

Because we are called for more, we are called to become servants of Providence, bearers of love, and builders of a better future.

Join the Journey

Whether you are a student, staff member, faculty leader, or alum, you are invited to live the Providence mission—to educate the whole person, to uplift the human spirit, and to walk in solidarity with others.

Let us grow together as a Community of Character, anchored in faith, called by love, and sent forth in service.
