University of Providence Announces Appointment of Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs & Provost

FOR RELEASE: April 1, 2026

GREAT FALLS, MONTANA – The University of Providence announces the appointment of Barbara Aranda-Naranjo, PhD, RN, FAAN, as Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, effective March 26, 2026.

Dr. Aranda-Naranjo brings more than three decades of senior leadership experience spanning higher education, federal service, and community-based health systems. A nationally and internationally recognized leader in nursing and public health, she has a demonstrated record of advancing academic quality, strengthening mission-centered institutions, and aligning academic portfolios with workforce and community needs.

Her appointment reflects the University’s continued commitment to disciplined academic leadership and strategic execution during a period of focused institutional alignment. As the University advances the priorities outlined in the Providence 100 strategic framework, Dr. Aranda-Naranjo will play a central role in ensuring academic excellence, operational coherence, and mission fidelity.

“It is an honor to serve as Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost at the University of Providence,” said Dr. Aranda-Naranjo. “The University’s Catholic identity and the legacy of the Sisters of Providence provide a clear foundation for the future. I look forward to working collaboratively with the President, faculty, and campus community to strengthen academic programs, support students, and advance a shared vision grounded in service and impact.”

Dr. Aranda-Naranjo has previously served as Chief Academic Officer/Provost and Endowed Chair at the University of the Incarnate Word and as the Robert and Kathleen Scanlon Endowed Chair at Georgetown University. Her leadership has been marked by the development of innovative academic programs, expansion of interprofessional education, and measurable improvements in student and community outcomes. Her federal service includes senior leadership roles within the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), where she directed national and global initiatives in HIV/AIDS education and workforce development, including service as Deputy Director for HRSA’s PEPFAR program in sub-Saharan Africa. Her work has focused on building sustainable systems of care and strengthening health workforce pipelines—experience directly aligned with the University’s strategic emphasis on health sciences and community impact.

“Dr. Aranda-Naranjo brings the experience, judgment, and mission alignment needed to guide academic affairs at an important moment for the University,” said Dr. Caroline Goulet, President. “Her leadership will ensure continuity, clarity, and forward momentum as we continue to align our academic offerings with student demand, workforce needs, and long-term institutional sustainability.”

The University of Providence is confident that her leadership will provide stability, strategic clarity, and continued progress toward the institution’s long-term vision.
