GREAT FALLS, MONTANA – University of Providence President Tony Aretz announced today that Dr. Matthew A. Redinger has been named provost. He will begin his role on campus starting July 1, 2018.
Redinger will be responsible for the academic budget, leadership of the faculty, and academic program development, including community outreach programs, oversight of institutional accreditation, and promoting scholarly and creative activities. He will also be involved in creating and deepening “high impact” practices that engage students, such as undergraduate research, study abroad, internships, and more.
“Hiring Matt for the provost position is a huge step for our campus as it continues its path toward a bigger and bolder vision,” says Aretz. “His leadership, integrity, and humility bring a broad base of experience that will enable him to lead significant institutional change.”
Redinger comes to UP from Montana State University Billings, where he has served as vice provost for academic affairs, interim vice provost for academic affairs, history department chair, and as a tenured history professor.
At MSU Billings, he continued to build a culture of trust between faculty and administration, managed the strategic plan, oversaw the general education program, administered budgets for university-wide accreditation, served as a member of the Chancellor’s Cabinet to contribute to overall management of the institution, lead the Academic Program Prioritization initiative, and was the campus accreditation liaison officer, among other key roles.

I look forward to leading and learning from the UP community for many years to come. I’ve been a lifelong advocate of the Catholic intellectual tradition, and value the liberal arts in that context. Being a part of a university that has similar values is a great privilege.”
The new provost holds a doctorate of philosophy in history from University of Washington, Seattle; a master of arts in history from the University of Montana, Missoula; a bachelor of arts in history from the University of Montana; and undergraduate study from Carroll College in theology, philosophy, and history.
Redinger’s experience benefits UP as it continues its strategic plan, which includes campus growth, athletic growth, and academic growth.
