ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF ENGLISH

Position Summary

 
Full-time, tenure track faculty will support the university’s mission, uphold its Catholic identity, and contribute to its liberal arts and professional education traditions. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate composition courses, including first-year writing, developmental writing, and upper-level writing in various disciplines. Some of these courses may be offered online, including intensive 8-week writing courses for students in the School of Health Professions. Additionally, the faculty member will engage in service to the English program, Humanities department, Lumen de Lumine core curriculum, university, profession, and community.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching a combined total of 12 credits per semester (fall and spring) in undergraduate programs. Nine-month contract with summer teaching possibilities.
  • Developing and instructing courses in developmental writing, first-year writing, and upper-division writing in the disciplines, with further possibility of developing and teaching interdisciplinary courses and first-year seminar core curriculum courses.
  • Contributing to the intellectual life of the Humanities department and university.
  • Regularly engaging in mission-focused service to the university, community, and profession.
  • Staying up-to-date and actively engaging in professional disciplinary conversations (through conference presentations, publication, service, etc.) about best practices in writing instruction.
  • Advising undergraduate students as needed.
  • Sharing responsibility for program, WAC, and Core assessment and development.
  • Performing all duties in a manner which reflects the University and PSJH mission and philosophy.

 

Requirements

Education
  • Applicant should hold a Ph.D. in Rhetoric/Composition, English, or a closely related field.  ABD candidates who are nearing completion of the dissertation considered.

Experience
  • Applicant must be able to provide evidence of success in teaching first-year and developmental undergraduate writing courses.
  • Applicant must be able to provide evidence of substantial, successful collaboration with colleagues in an academic context
  • Preference given to candidates who have experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • online writing instruction
    • best practices for instructing nontraditional adult learners
    • writing center theory and practice
    • WAC/WID work
    • writing program assessment
    • liberal arts curricula
