Message from the President

Today, I am sharing difficult news with our University community. After careful consideration, the University of Providence Board of Trustees has made the decision to cease educational operations. The last day of classes will be August 20, 2027. Administrative work related to the University’s closure will continue after classes end. I know this affects plans you have made for your education, your work, and your future. This news may bring sadness, uncertainty, and difficult questions about what comes next.

For nearly a century, the University of Providence has brought people together through education, faith, and service. We have faced sustained enrollment and financial challenges, and pursued multiple paths to secure the University’s future. Despite those efforts, we could not find a financially sustainable way forward. Our responsibility now is to support you and help you understand what comes next.

To our students: We know how much you have invested in your education and the questions this news raises for you and your families. Helping you find a path to complete your degree is our first priority. We will work with you individually to explore your options, based on your program and the courses you still need to complete. For some students, that may mean graduating at the University of Providence in May or August 2027. For others, it will mean continuing at another institution. Faculty advisors will schedule a meeting with you to discuss your next steps. You do not need to wait for that conversation to ask for help. Please reach out to Monica Thackeray or Carilyn Voorhies with immediate questions.

To our faculty and staff: I know this news brings uncertainty for you and your families, too. You have given your time, your talent, and your care to this University, supporting our students and one another through difficult moments. I am grateful for all you have done and continue to do. Human Resources is ready to share information about employment timelines, benefits, and available transition support. For questions about your own situation, please reach out to Melanie Houge.

To our alumni and friends: Whether you knew this institution as the College of Great Falls, University of Great Falls or the University of Providence, you remain part of this community. I know this news touches you deeply. Your lives and the communities you serve will continue to reflect what this University has meant. Throughout this academic year, we will share what we know, be clear about what remains unresolved, and tell you when to expect more information.

Please send your questions to questions@uprovidence.edu.  They will help us better understand what you need to know and what we need to explain more clearly.  You can also find updates, answers to common questions, and support contacts on our website at UProvidence.edu.

In the months ahead, our values must guide how we care for people and carry out our responsibilities – with compassion, dignity, and integrity. We will remain focused on supporting our students and employees.  Thank you for all you have given to the University of Providence and for the care you continue to show one another.

Finally, we are deeply grateful to the Sisters of Providence, whose legacy of faith, service, and charity lives on through our students and all whose lives they touched. Please take care of yourselves and each other.

We are here to help. Please reach out if you have any questions.
