Health Informatics Courses: The University of Providence’s Certificate Track

health informatics certificate

Health informatics – while some may be familiar with the term, others are just hearing it for the first time. Health informatics is the interdisciplinary study of healthcare and information technology, which employs health records and data to improve patient care outcomes.

Health informatics is now one of the healthcare industry’s fastest-growing fields – with more caregivers and administrators recognizing its importance within healthcare.

But there’s a lot more to it than that. Informatics is more than some fancy c-suite tool used by executives or administrators to track patients or improve compliance. Frontline workers, medical assistants, and medical technicians of all disciplines are using health informatics – with many healthcare-focused degrees from the certificate to the graduate level, including it in their studies.

With a certificate in Applied Health Informatics from the University of Providence – healthcare professionals can learn how to utilize information technology better to improve patient care outcomes using patient records, health data, and medical data. UP’s certificate program provides targeted, flexible access to industry-specific information in digestible course sessions.

The Applied Health Informatics Curriculum is designed for working professionals to learn key skills and valuable insights about the emerging role of health informatics without significantly impacting personal and professional lives. UP’s dynamic course design and learning model delivers four courses over two semesters, totaling 12 credit hours. What’s more, UP’s health informatics certificate can be completed 100% online in as little as eight months with the opportunity for financial aid.

Enrolled students can expect to learn not just the fundamentals of informatics but how informatics can be applied across various healthcare professions and disciplines. Students take four classes – exploring, applying, reading, and revealing informatics – packed with valuable information caregivers of all levels can use in their practice.

Students enrolled in these courses can expect to learn the following:

Exploring Informatics

Exploring informatics introduces the concepts, practices, and applications of the intersection of healthcare and information technology. Students will explore the foundations of data, data standards, informatics impact on healthcare, health informatics terminology, and more.

Applying Informatics

Applying informatics builds on the foundations of health informatics. The course dives into clinical information systems, project management tools for systems, human technology design and interaction, health information technology (HIT) useability, safety issues, and more.

Leading Informatics

Leading informatics focuses on the training and application of HIT-related software within healthcare settings. Students will learn the adoption of HIT, its implementation, methodology, management, and principles. Students also learn the impact factors leading to HOT adoption success or failure, design, implementation, and evaluation of training strategies.

Revealing Informatics

Revealing informatics prepares students to present healthcare information and data using various data visualization tools, tables, and charts to advocate for and display data to promote decision-making within health systems. The course focuses on data integrity, data standards, data analysis tools, data security, clinical and business decision support, and more.

After completing these courses, students will graduate from the programs with a certificate in Applied Health Informatics, which can be used across various healthcare careers. The certificate can also lead to new career opportunities as a medical records specialist, health informaticist, or an expanded role within a current one. The foundation’s students learn as part of UP’s Health Informatics certificate will prepare them for advanced informatics roles or career opportunities – which may include careers in healthcare administration, nursing informatics, or more.

No matter how the course material will be used, Applied Health Informatics from the University of Providence is a fast, flexible, and affordable way to explore and expand healthcare professionals’ knowledge of the intersection between information technology and healthcare.
