University of Providence President Tony Aretz announced that Dr. Gaby Hawat has been named Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer. He began his role on May 6.

Dr. Hawat’s responsibilities include overseeing strategy, risk and compliance, finance, physical plant, enrollment management, information services, human resources, and marketing and communications.

“Dr. Hawat has vast amounts of experience in higher education and is excited to be able to be a part of a Catholic mission-based university,” says President Tony Aretz. “His experience in leadership, his integrity, and his passion for our mission and vision will enable him to make a big impact on our university’s future.”

Dr. Hawat has more than 30 years’ experience, most notably in the fields of education and science. In addition to his role at UP, he is a Principal at Catalyst Partners, and serves as Chairman of the National Visiting Committee for the National CyberWatch Center (NCC). Most recently, Dr. Hawat was Senior Vice President for Operations and Global Initiatives at Florida Institute of Technology (FIT). Prior to FIT, he spent nearly three decades in a number of progressively responsible positions at Valencia College in Orlando. He held the position of Special Assistant to the President and Senior Executive for Strategic Initiatives and Economic Development during his final decade at the college, which included responsibility for developing new markets, strategic enterprises and partnerships, and provided widespread experience in developing global relationships. His previous positions at the college included Dean of Architecture, Engineering and Technology as well as Department Chair of Business, Computer Technology, Engineering and Public Services.

“It is with a great deal of excitement that I take on this new role at UP,” says Dr. Hawat. “The university has a bright future and I’m honored to be a part of that. I’m also excited to get involved with not only the university community, but the Great Falls community, as well.”

Dr. Hawat holds a Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Electrical Engineering from Florida Institute of Technology, a Doctorate degree in Higher Education Leadership from Nova Southeastern University and is a graduate of Harvard University’s Management Development Program.

Dr. Hawat’s experience benefits UP as it continues its strategic plan, which includes growth in both the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the School of Health Professions, growth in athletics, and growth in the campus overall.
