What makes our program unique?

The exercise science program at UP offers:

  • Significant emphasis on current scientific principles and their application to real-world clients and situations
  • Emphasis on professional development and networking
  • Opportunities for educational specialization. The exercise science program has four concentrations: graduate school preparation, strength and conditioning, personal training, and sport coaching. Within these concentrations there is flexibility for tailoring the educational outcomes to specific career objectives
  • Opportunities in research with the growing exercise science laboratory

Learning Objectives

Students will gain classroom, laboratory, and hands-on experience in a wide range of subject areas including:

  • Exercise Physiology
  • Biomechanics and Applied Anatomy
  • Sport and Exercise Nutrition
  • Coaching
  • Exercise Testing
  • Exercise Program Design

The culminating experience for this course of study is an internship in a student interest area: athletic trainer/physical therapist/occupational therapist job shadowing, personal trainer job shadowing, or strength and conditioning. While not a requirement for graduation, certification through a national accrediting body is encouraged.

Career Preparation

The exercise science major allows the student to prepare for a career as a health/fitness professional. Many of these careers, according to the United States Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, are anticipating much faster than average job growth through 2024.

  • Personal trainer
  • Strength and conditioning coach
  • Corporate fitness coordinator
  • Wellness coach
  • Cardiac rehabilitation
  • Cancer rehabilitation
  • Sport coach
  • Graduate school placement in clinical exercise physiology, athletic training, chiropractic care, occupational therapy, and physical therapy
