Scholarship contributions are gifts that expand like the motion of water when a pebble is dropped into a pool of water. It begins with your financial support, followed by a fortunate student receiving the scholarship award. The ripple then carries outward as they graduate and begin service in their chosen communities.
Approximately 96% of UP’s undergraduates receive financial assistance. Each year scholarships are awarded to qualified and academically talented students like Jacob. Read his story and you will see for yourself the impact scholarship funding had on him. It is astronomical!
I am a local kid and I have lived in Great Falls since I was eight years old. Growing up I had to fight off endless amounts of adversity varying from family drug addiction, parents not always being present in my life, and my father passing away when I was in high school. Since I moved to Great Falls, I have been living with my grandparents and it wasn’t always easy. My grandma is disabled and cannot work, and my grandfather is a teacher, but that income wouldn’t always cut it. My grandpa would always be refereeing, coaching, and doing small jobs on the side just to have a little extra cash to help the family. I had to go through a lot of tough times but one thing that always kept me going was my love for education and basketball. I have bounced back and forth between majors and I have landed on psychology and addictions counseling. After I graduate this spring, I plan on going and furthering my education in school counseling and helping the youth within the school systems. I believe my story is one that can relate with those who go through adverse times in their life, which is many.
I chose the University of Providence not only for its amazing health care programs and psychology department, but so I can also play the game that I fell in love with eighteen years ago. I declared two years ago that I would go into psychology and I couldn’t be more excited. Before I received a scholarship, I was looking at taking out thousands of dollars in student loans just to get my education, but once I saw I was lucky enough to receive a scholarship it lifted the weight off of my shoulders. I couldn’t be more grateful for the amazing gesture and it is helping make a young man’s dream come true.
Thank you for your generosity and support and I promise that I will work to my full potential to achieve my dream and be able to contribute to society as not only a teacher but as a mentor.
This year’s Annual Alumni Phonathon will kick off on October 28 and run through November 21 with UP students making calls from 5-9 p.m. MST Monday through Thursday. All donations made during the 2019 annual Phonathon will provide more UP students an opportunity to gain a college degree with the assistance of a student scholarship.
Thank you for considering a contribution to the future of our University of Providence students!
